We’re been moving the nursery, which meant figuring out how to relocate our massive awning. Enter our new field tech. With the help of a great friend, they completely deconstructed it, prepped it for transport, and packed it up for the new site...all without breaking a sweat, maybe a little sweat.

Imagine smoky barbecue in the air, a ice-cold craft brew in hand, and live tunes setting the soundtrack for a crisp fall evening. That’s exactly how we’re kicking off planting season at Hester & Zipperer for this year's Tree Huggers and Beer Chuggers event on October 2nd, from 5 to 8 PM.

It’s a full evening of local love made for the whole family. You can sip your way through bottomless adult beverages (or free-flowing sodas for the kids), explore the plant nursery after dark, try your luck at the raffle, or just kick back on the lawn while the music plays.

Late Summer heat is finally breaking, and Savannah is getting ready to dig in.

The tail end of summer means transition time. The brutal heatwaves are wrapping up, giving way to the ideal window for fall planting, the absolute best season to put fresh roots in the earth.

Our Roots for Relief drive fuels the entire cycle of keeping Savannah shaded and green. Your contribution supports our general mission, but here is a quick snapshot of how those dollars translate to boots-on-the-ground work:

$15 can water 10 newly planted saplings to wrap up the summer heat.

$50 equips a young tree with protective mulch, structural pruning, and heat-stress recovery.

1. Certified Arborist journey?
To deepen my technical knowledge and make tree care accessible to everyone—from future pros to neighbors just curious about their local canopy!

2. Biggest tree care misconception?
That once it’s planted, you’re done! A tree’s first few years are critical. Early watering, depth, and pruning prevent most mature tree issues.

3. Favorite part of community work?
When someone gets excited about a tree they’ve walked past a hundred times. Seeing that "click" moment during a walk is the best.

4. Most exciting project right now?
Our Free Yard Tree Program! Since 95% of Chatham County is private land, partnering with residents is key to growing our canopy together.

5. #1 tree care tip?
Find the root flare! Always ensure the base widens above the soil, and never build "mulch volcanoes" against the trunk.

6. Favorite event memory?
Watching walk attendees start spotting tree details on their own by the end of a tour. Curiosity unlocked!

7. Personality tree match?
Bald cypress! Adaptable, water-loving, resilient, and a total rebel conifer that drops its needles every year.

8. Life outside of trees?
Training my two English Springer Spaniels for AKC shows, bungee workouts, native prairie gardening, running a small vintage shop, and Rotary!

Sorry for the super late update today, guys! We had to call it a day right around 2:30 when the heat hit its peak, and I’m just now getting a second to breathe.

But man, the progress at the new community nursery makes all that sweating worth it! We got the weed mat completely laid down to prep the site, and we were able to get a ton of fence posts into the ground before the heat tapped us out. By the end of today, pretty much all of them should be set.

First thing tomorrow morning, we are hitting the ground running to attach the bracing and start stretching the fencing. It is so exciting watching this space actually come together!

History in the making continued.

Pages 4–7 of the original 1983 preservation report dig into one of the Candler Oak’s toughest historical hurdles: a thick, 3-inch layer of asphalt paved right up against its trunk.

The report tracks how decades of trapped roots and suffocated soil triggered heavy stress and dead twigs throughout the canopy. At the time, documenting this damage wasn't just about saving one oak—it provided concrete evidence of how bad paving practices ruin ancient trees. More importantly, it laid out an alternative management plan to strip back the asphalt, restore the ground, and give the tree room to breathe again.

That early management program became a real turning point. It set a new precedent for how Savannah handled its historic canopy and helped drive the fight for much stronger tree protection policies across the city.

Besides clearing up the air, we’ve been busy clearing out brush, organizing our new office space, and setting out picnic tables to make this place feel like home.

If you’ve driven down Louisville Rd lately, you’ve seen the vine that ate the South in full force. Kudzu can grow up to a foot a day in our summer heat, smothering canopy trees and choking off the sunlight they need to perform photosynthesis.

Worse yet? During coastal storm season, that extra weight and water retention turns a tree canopy into a heavy sail—making even giant Live Oaks vulnerable to getting pulled down in high winds.

Ever wonder why Southern Live Oaks, Bald Cypress, and Southern Magnolias barely flinch under a scorching July sun?

They’ve spent thousands of years adapting to coastal Georgia’s unique footprint. From sandy soils and thick humidity to week-long heatwaves, these trees are already hardwired to handle local conditions.

While non-native species usually demand constant soaking, fertilizers, and extra protection just to scrape by, native trees take care of themselves once established. They build deep root networks and use specialized foliage to manage water loss on autopilot.
