The new tree nursery is coming together, and we couldn’t ask for a better partner than Bethesda Academy. Hosting our nursery on Bethesda’s beautiful, historic property gives us the exact space we need to bring our "Right Tree, Right Place" vision to life.

Our team’s been putting in serious work behind the scenes this week clearing out debris and getting the land ready. Now, the heavy lifting starts this weekend as we set up our fencing and irrigation lines!

We’ll be inviting you to jump in and get your hands dirty with us very soon.

Worse yet? During coastal storm season, that extra weight and water retention turns a tree canopy into a heavy sail—making even giant Live Oaks vulnerable to getting pulled down in high winds.

They’ve spent thousands of years adapting to coastal Georgia’s unique footprint. From sandy soils and thick humidity to week-long heatwaves, these trees are already hardwired to handle local conditions.

While non-native species usually demand constant soaking, fertilizers, and extra protection just to scrape by, native trees take care of themselves once established. They build deep root networks and use specialized foliage to manage water loss on autopilot.

Last Friday, we gathered at the historic Candler Oak for Wines and Vines, and we couldn't be more grateful for the turnout. Together with an incredible group of volunteers, we gave the Candler Oak yard some much-needed love, weeding, laying down fresh pine straw, and seeding the grounds so this space can stay beautiful and welcoming for future gatherings.

A huge shoutout to our friends at Gulfstream for showing up in full force and standing behind our mission. We truly couldn't do this work without corporate partners and community members who care so deeply about Savannah’s urban forest.

This is just the beginning! Keep an eye on our page as we’re planning more Fall events under the Candler Oak, including a potential movie night under the tree’s canopy!

Dug up the first three pages of an original 1983 preservation report for the Candler Oak! Over four decades ago, tree champions sat down and mapped out a plan to give this giant the root space and soil quality it needed to last another hundred years.

We’re dropping pages 1–3 here (and we'll post the rest soon), but the real work happens out in the dirt.

This evening, we’re putting those words into action. We’ll be at the Candler Oak clearing debris, seeding grass, and giving the root zone some much-needed love.

If you've got a free hour or two, come grab some shade, a glass of wine, and lend a hand!

Nothing restores your faith in the future quite like seeing the next generation get excited about trees. Last week, we got to spend the day hiking Skidaway Island with some incredible young future canopy guardians!

We explored the trails, talked about why native trees are so vital to our coastal ecosystem, and practiced spotting local species along the way.

Seeing their curiosity and passion for taking care of our urban forest gives us so much hope. The future of Savannah’s canopy is truly in great hands!

Think of mulch as a mix of sunscreen and AC for your tree's root system.

When the heat waves roll through, bare dirt can easily spike past 100°F. That intense heat fries the delicate feeder roots just beneath the surface. A good, thick layer of wood chips or pine straw keeps the ground cool, locks in moisture, and keeps lawnmowers safely away from the trunk.

But you have to stack it right. Piling mulch directly against the bark creates a "volcano" that traps moisture, triggers rot, and invites bugs to move right in.

Keep these rules in mind:

Donuts, not volcanoes: Leave a clear 3-inch gap of bare dirt completely around the wooden trunk so the tree can breathe.

Keep it flat: Aim for a 2-to-3-inch deep layer. Any deeper and you'll suffocate the roots.

Go wide: Spread that ring all the way out to the tree's drip line (where the leaves end). That’s exactly where the underground roots are searching for water.

The team presented “Growing Our Trees, Our Future: Savannah Tree Foundation’s Effort to Ensure a Green Future for All” to attendees from across Georgia. Our crew was honored to network with fellow professionals from the aboriculture and green industry, as well as share updates about our great work.

Are you watering your trees correctly this summer? A quick daily sprinkle from the hose won't cut it in the Georgia heat.

When you just wet the surface of the soil, the water evaporates instantly under the harsh sun. Even worse, it encourages tree roots to grow upward toward the surface to find moisture, making them incredibly vulnerable to baking in the heat.

Native trees thrive on deep, infrequent watering. This trains their roots to grow deep into the soil where it stays cooler and wetter!

Here is the summer hydration blueprint:

The Amount: Young trees (planted within the last 3 years) need about 10–15 gallons of water every single week.

The Method: Turn your hose on a slow trickle at the base of the tree trunk for 15–20 minutes, or use a 5-gallon bucket with a small hole drilled in the bottom.

The Timing: Water in the early morning or late evening so the roots get a chance to drink before the sun takes over.
