Savannah Tree Foundation is thrilled to introduce its newest program, the Chatham Canopy Corps.
We are seeking 3 highly-motivated individuals to join us for a yearlong, paid apprenticeship. This program targets young people (ages 18-27) who are interested in exploring a career in tree care, landscaping, or urban forestry. Preference will be given to those not traditionally represented in the arboriculture field, including women and minority candidates.
The first Chatham Canopy Corps Cohort will start in July 2024.

Pay starts at $15.50/hour, full-time hours.

No prior experience necessary.
As a Canopy Corps Apprentice at Savannah Tree Foundation, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and knowledge in the field of arboriculture and tree care. This apprenticeship program is designed to provide you with valuable skills and insights into tree nursery operations, tree planting logistics, and the growth and maintenance of a diverse range of tree species. You will work closely with our team of experienced professionals and contribute to our mission of promoting a healthy urban forest in Chatham County.
Responsibilities
  Tree Planting and Maintenance

- Participate in the planting and transportation of trees in various locations, including parks, urban areas, and restoration projects
- Assist in ongoing maintenance tasks in the field, including watering, mulching, fertilizing and pest management.
- Maintain a high level of tidiness and professionalism at job sites and throughout the community.
- Learn to operate and maintain planting and maintenance equipment and tools.
 Tree Nursery Care

- Assist in the care and maintenance of tree seedlings, including potting, watering, fertilizing, and pest management.
- Help maintain accurate inventory records of tree species and quantities in the nursery.
- Prepare soil mixes.
- Learn to operate and maintain nursery equipment.
- Identify and assist in managing diseases and pests that may affect nursery stock
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
Qualifications

- Passion for urban forestry, trees, and the community
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment that requires repetitive bending, lifting, and shoveling
- Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
- Ability to work within a team and independently on assigned job tasks
- Willingness and ability to put safety first
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to be an example of integrity and create a respectful work environment with others
- High school degree or GRE preferred, but not required
