NATIVE TREES

NATIVE TREES & SPECIES DIVERSITY ARE IMPORTANT

While not all non-native tree species are invasive, promoting native tree species has many benefits. These include habitat for wildlife, adaptation to local climate conditions, and incredible species diversity. Many non-native species that are planted are cultivars (a tree selectively bred for certain characteristics), and do not have the genetic diversity of native species. This is particularly important for resistance to pests and pathogens. Click the links below to learn about some of our native tree species, and where they can be found around Chatham County.

Looking to buy some natives of your own? While some nurseries do carry a selection of native species, each fall the Savannah Tree Foundation holds a native plant sale. Stay tuned for updates on next year’s sale!
